The Weekly Digest #1: The one about Superman
Weekly GamerScore Tally: 95
Welcome to the first of a new little column on Area 360, which will basically be a weekly bulletin on how I've gamed in the past week - maybe not very exciting, but still, it's a chance to look into the life of a casual gamer, and for me to vent some of my opininons.
Anyway, in the last week, I've still been playing Call of Duty 3 - well kinda, it's been usurped as being my main game by Just Cause. Just Cause isn't a massively fantastic game, but it's something I promised myself I would complete (my list of completed games is looking pretty short) - and I intend to do that before the end of the month; or at the very least before Christmas. I'm down to all the boring achievements now unfortunately though - so it's a tiring process.
Otherwise, I've been spending time playing through the Superman Returns Demo, which recently made a suprise appearance on the Marketplace. It's not what you'd expect of a movie-tie-in (I'm not sure it can be called a tie-in, since the movie was released months ago), it's actually really cool and original.
You control Superman, and in the demo, fly, run and fight your way around Metropolis to protect innocent civilians from the clutches of evil. You have three powers at your disposal;
Heat Vision; great for setting stuff on fire and burning down the house!
Freeze Breath; freezes the target for a few seconds. Not much use, but it puts fire out pretty nicely (hint hint).
Wind; this is by far the coolest power and one of the greatest things I've seen in a demo for quite a while. Superman fires breath at the target at super-high speeds - giving you the ability to flip cars and launch enemies miles into the air!
But unfortunately, it's a little repetetive (as was the flaw in the other-wise excellent Spiderman game). You can use all the super powers, and learn all the moves, but unfortunately, there's not much more to it. Which is why I'd give this game the rather unique label of 'really cool tech demo' - I doubt I'll buy it (well maybe if I can get it for <£25, but not right now), but I'll keep enjoying the demo for now. Talking about the Superman Returns Demo, it only becomes available to Silver members tomorrow.. that's a full week later than it was available to Gold members. And this doesn't look to be the only demo taking on a late release to Silver members; with the Cars and Rainbow Six: Las Vegas Multiplayer demos following suit. So with myself being a Silver member (as demonstrated by my GamerCard, on the right), what are my opinions on this?
Strangely enough, I whole-heartedly welcome it. I think that they [Gold Members] are paying for a premium service and that they perhaps deserve priority - and it takes pressure off Microsoft's servers as not everyone's downloading at once. I mean what's a week anyway, I think that I can manage that long without a demo.
Tomorrow sees the one year anniversary of the launch of the Xbox 360 console - and in response to the Playstation 3 launch, Microsoft have announced that tomorrow will be the day that Xbox 360 users can begin to download episodes of their favourite TV shows and full-length High-Definition movies! The catch being that it's been heavily suggested that this is both US and Gold Member only (neither of which criteria I fit into) - I guess we'll see tomorrow. I'm not going to comment on the exclusivity of the new feature until I've seen it for myself - so that's something to save for next week's digest... along with my opinions on Small Arms (which I previously reported as being released tomorrow).
And as a last note, congrats to the whole Xbox team for reaching it's fifth birthday, I've been on-board the Xbox bandwagon since Easter 2002, and I've loved every minute of it. Good job guys!
